Le futur proche : The near future
The futur proche is used to talk about an action that is going to happen in the near future. It is one of the easiest ways to talk about the future in French. The formula is
Subject + aller + infinitive
For example,
-
Je vais parler. — I am going to speak.
-
Elle va travailler. — She is going to work.
-
Nous allons partir. — We are going to leave.

How to form the futur proche
To form the futur proche, use:
ALLER in the present tense + infinitive
STEP 1
The first verb, aller, is conjugated according to the subject.
STEP 2
The second verb remains in its infinitive form.
example
Parler — To speak
Je vais parler. → I am going to speak.
HERE,
Vais → Present tense of aller
Parler → Infinitive or Full verb
So,
Je + vais + parler
Aller in Present tense
Je vais
Tu vas
Il va / Elle va / On va
Nous allons
Vous allez
Ils / Elles vont
Futur proche avec les verbes pronominaux
For pronominal verbs, the reflexive pronoun comes before the infinitive, not before aller.
Structure
Subject + aller (present) + reflexive pronoun + infinitive
Example: se lever — To stand up / To rise
Je vais me lever
Subject
Je
Tu
Il / Elle / On
Nous
Vous
Ils / Elles
Aller
vais
vas
va
allons
allez
vont
Reflexive pronoun
me
te
se
nous
vous
se
Infinitif
lever
lever
lever
lever
lever
lever
Example sentences
-
Se lever → Je vais me lever tôt demain.
I am going to get up early tomorrow. -
Se coucher → Tu vas te coucher à quelle heure ?
What time are you going to go to bed? -
S’endormir → Je vais m’endormir rapidement.
I am going to fall asleep quickly. -
Se promener → Nous allons nous promener ce soir.
We are going to go for a walk this evening. -
Se défendre→ Il va se défendre devant le tribunal.
He is going to defend himself in court.
IMPORTANT
The verb aller is conjugated, while the pronominal verb remains in the infinitive, with its reflexive pronoun.
-
Je vais me lever. ✅
-
Je me vais lever. ❌
We should also include negative sentences with pronominal verbs, because that is another point learners often find confusing:
For Example
-
Se lever → Je ne vais pas me lever tôt.
I am not going to get up early. -
Se coucher → Elle ne va pas se coucher tard.
She is not going to go to bed late.
The negative form
To make the futur proche negative, put ne ... pas around the conjugated form of aller.
Structure
Subject + ne + aller + pas + infinitive
For Example
-
Travailler → Je ne vais pas travailler demain.
I am not going to work tomorrow. -
Sortir → Elle ne va pas sortir soir.
She is not going to go out tonight. -
Voyager → Nous n’allons pas voyager cette semaine.
We are not going to travel this week. -
Venir → Ils ne vont pas venir à la fête.
They are not going to come to the party.
Note:
French has several other forms of negation, such as ne... jamais, ne... plus, ne... rien, and ne... personne. For easy understanding, we use ne...pas here. Other forms of negation generally follow the same basic principle, with the negative expression placed around the conjugated form of aller.
For example:
Je ne vais jamais oublier ça. → I am never going to forget that.
Elle ne va plus travailler ici. → She is no longer going to work here.
