From Giscard d’Estaing to Emmanuel Macron: French Presidents at India’s Republic Day Parade
By now, we all know that French President Emmanuel Macron will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations on 26th January 2024, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had announced recently. Mr. Macron has acknowledged the invite and announced that he will be here for the festivities.
Over the years, several French Presidents have been honoured guests at this remarkable event, showcasing the strong diplomatic ties between India and France. Let us therefore look at the many French Presidents who have graced this prestigious occasion in the past.
President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing was the first French President to attend India’s Republic Day parade in 1976. His presence marked a significant moment in India-France relations, emphasizing mutual respect and cooperation between the two nations.
One notable visit was by President François Mitterrand in 1986. His visit strengthened the bilateral relations between France and India, emphasizing cooperation in diverse sectors.
In 1998, President Jacques Chirac’s visit reaffirmed the strategic partnership between the two countries. His presence at the Republic Day symbolized the commitment to fostering strong diplomatic ties, particularly in areas of defence, trade, and cultural exchange.

In 2016, President François Hollande attended the Republic Day celebrations as the Chief Guest. His visit accentuated the deepening Indo-French relations, particularly in areas of defence and counter-terrorism cooperation, reaffirming the commitment to a strong partnership.
