Learning the French alphabet is the first step in mastering the French language. Just like English, French has 26 letters. Understanding these sounds is important because French spelling and pronunciation don’t always match the way they do in English.

Accents in the French Alphabet

One thing that makes French special is the use of accents. These don’t exist in English, but they completely change how a letter is pronounced.
é (accent aigu) – pronounced “ay”
è (accent grave) – sounds like “eh”
ê (accent circonflexe) – also “eh” but slightly longer
ç (cédille) – makes “c” sound like “s”

French is known as the language of love because of its flow and sound. Learning how to pronounce each letter correctly helps you read, speak, and even sing in French with confidence.

At Simply FRENCH, we help you learn the alphabet with fun exercises, songs, and practice sessions, making the first step of your French journey simple and enjoyable.
